Nominated for Inscription on the World Heritage List

The activities of Kamakura for inscription on the World Heritage List started in 1992 when it was registered in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as "Temples, Shrines and other structures of Ancient Kamakura".

In 2004, Kamakura City defined a new concept "Kamakura, Home of the Samurai", and began the full-fledged preparation for the inscription from 2007 in cooperation with Yokohama City and Zushi City where component parts are located and with Kanagawa Prefecture.

History of our activities

July 2007 ・Organized "Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama City, Kamakura City and Zushi City World Heritage Inscription Promotion Committee".
・Organized "Drafting Committee for the Nomination Dossier for the Inscription of "Kamakura, Home of the Samurai" by selected expert archaeologist and historian, and started the preparation work.

January 2009 The 1st International Meeting: Defined the subjects to be coped toward the inscription.
August 2009 The 2nd International Meeting: Progress review and follow up the subjects raised at the 1st meeting.
June 2010 The 3rd International Meeting: Suggested to add mountainous area into the property.
March 2011 The 4th International Meeting: Appraised that major subjects were clarified and settled .

August 2011 "Kamakura, Home of the Samurai" draft nomination dossier has been completed and approved by "Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama City, Kamakura City and Zushi City World Heritage Inscription Promotion Committee".

September 2011 Nomination dossier (Tentative) was submitted to UNESCO World Heritage Center by the Japanese Government.

January 2012 Nomination dossier (Final) was officially submitted to UNESCO World Heritage Center by the Japanese Government.

Around June-July 2013 Resolution by the 37th UNESCO World Heritage Committee to inscribe or not.
